Neural Engines Leapfrog Wireless 5G Capabilities.
Eugene, OR, April 1, 2023/PN Newswire — Stunning advances in Artificial Intelligent (AI) Large Language Models (LLM) are impacting plans for the 6th generation (6G) wireless standards, and Spectrum Financial Consulting, Apple, Qualcomm, Google and Samsung are leading the way to using AI to leapfrog current wireless networks.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT has recently shocked the world with it’s ability to pass bar-exams, compose papers, poetry, limericks and reports in any number of styles, or length, that are nearly indistinguishable from human experts. Simultaneously, chip design companies, particularly Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and Apple’s bionic chip families have achieved remarkably power efficient neural engines capable of tens of trillions of operations per second through 8 or even 16 cores. (Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with 8 cores is said to perform 27 Trillion Operations per Second (TOPs) while Apple’s Bionic A16’s 16 cores support 17 TOPs.)
The energy to generate a single response to a query is estimated to be about 4 Watt hours (according to ChatGPT’s Electricity Consumption, or 1 to 10 W h per query according to this link), a significant fraction of the total energy capacity of an iPhone 14 Pro’s battery (62.7 W h).
However, by using a neural engine instead of the A100 GPU assumed to be used by OpenAI, the energy efficiency and speed of the handsets is thought to allow ChatGPT-4 to execute on modern smartphones. In addition, a pared-down version of ChatGPT-4 such as MobileBERT and even ChatGPT-2 have been successfully run on mobile platforms. With lessons learned from ChatGPT-4 as well as it’s direct help, such mobile-oriented Large Language Models (LLMs) are able to provide much of the AI services that mobile users are most interested in.
With this capability in the handset, there is reduced need to access wireless services, freeing the wireless networks to service the Internet of Things. Given the creative hallucinating that LLMs are known for, entire Text conversations, emails, and web queries can be replaced by LLMs. Market studies have found that even stock inquiries created by an optimistic LLM are preferred to so-called “reality.”
With speech to text and text to speech interfaces atop the LLMs phone calls, too, can be replaced with AI agents, as long as the voices are consistently assigned based on phone number.
In the past, mobile phones needed to connect to the wireless network in order to provide communication services, but with LLMs smartphones can simulatecommunications without tying up the airwaves with frivolous “actual” communications, reducing latencies and improving speeds to be even faster than the old fashioned light speeds to physical people, servers and devices.
